Post on your blog before class Feb. 3. Aim for around 250 words.

Compare and contrast the Covino & Joliffe and Alexander & Losh readings. What did they argue, and how did they do it? Who do you think they were written for, and where might have these readings originally appeared? Which was easier to understand or more accessible to you? How did the rhetorical choices made by each set of authors change your comprehension of each piece?

    The Alexander and Losh piece was much easier for me to understand. The author made it clear that he was conveying a basic message of how to express the written word. I particularly liked how the author started the comic strip with the person not being able to write properly, and by the end of the comic, he got his point across in a very grammatically sound fashion. I think this comic was written for kids and people who are studying basic English skills, but can also be for more advanced students who sometimes forget what goes into an effective rhetorical statement. Many times, even advanced writers forget the basics: Ethos, Pathos and Logos. I liked how these concepts were featured in the comic, as well as giving a basic rundown of how to do a rhetorical analysis. The flyers featured in the comic gave it some humor while also conveying the proper way to write a rhetorical analysis.
    The Covino and Joliffe piece was a much more technical perspective on rhetoric, and was obviously more difficult to understand as it wasn’t a comic like the first reading. One thing I did like about this reading is how it opened up with quotes from historically influential people on what their definition of rhetoric was. Again, these are very technical definitions, but they are all pretty similar. The authors included a lot of history in this reading which wasn’t particularly exciting, but was interesting to see what the early days of rhetoric were like. Ethos, Pathos and Logos are also extensively defined, which broadened my understanding of each term more so than I already know.
